All enquiries concerning the nationality application can be made at the Information Counter on the 1st Floor of Identification Department (hereafter referred as DSI).

A. Application for Naturalization

1. Requirement

 Foreign nationals or stateless persons who are permanent residents of the Macao SAR may apply.

2. Procedure of Application

3. Submission and presentation of documents

    The applicant must submit the following documents:

  1. His Macao SAR Permanent Resident Identity Card and before the official issuance of this identity card, a valid Macao Resident Identity Card (hereafter referred as BIR) and this will be returned to the applicant after being verified.
  2. Birth certificate;
  3. Certificate that can prove his marital status (except in case of a bachelor or a spinster)
  4. Proof that he has a near relative that is a Chinese national (for example, proof of family relationship, photocopy of that near relative's identity card);
  5. Proof of nationality;
  6. Certificate of criminal record (issued not more than 90 days by the Macao SAR Government. If the applicant had lived in other place for 6 months or longer before he settled in Macao, he must also submit a certificate of criminal record of not more than 90 days by that government, counting from the date of its issue);
  7. Income proof of the applicant, his spouse, or parents (in case of a minor).

Once the application is approved, the applicant must, within 6 months from the date of notification of his approval, submit a document which proves that he has renounced his foreign nationality. Otherwise, the approval will lose effect.

    The applicant must submit the following documents:

  1. His Macao SAR Permanent Resident Identity Card and before the official issuance of this identity card, a valid BIR and this will be returned to the applicant after being verified;
  2. Birth certificate;
  3. Certificate that can prove his marital status (except in case of a bachelor or a spinster);
  4. Proof that he has the Chinese nationality
  5. Proof that he has other nationality.

    Notes:
    Documents mentioned in numbers b) and c) can be exempted if they already exist in the Archive of DSI;

C. Application for Restoration of Chinese Nationality

1. Requirement

3. Submission and presentation of documents

    The applicant must submit the following documents:

  1. His Macao SAR Permanent Resident Identity Card and before the official issuance of this identity card, a valid BIR and this will be returned to the applicant after being verified;
  2. Birth certificate;
  3. Certificate that can prove his marital status (except in case of a bachelor or a spinster);
  4. Proof that he once renounced his Chinese nationality;
  5. Certificate of criminal record (issued no more than 90 days by the Macao SAR Government from the date of issue);
  6. Proof of his current nationality.

    Notes :
    Documents mentioned in numbers b) and c) can be exempted if they already exist in the Archive of DSI;

Once the application is approved and otherwise the applicant is a stateless person, he must within 6 months from the date of notification of his approval, submit a document which proves that he had renounced his foreign nationality. Otherwise, his application will produce no effect.

    The applicant must submit the following documents:

  1. His Macao SAR Permanent Resident Identity Card and before the official issuance of this identity card, a valid BIR and this will be returned to the applicant after being verified;
  2. Birth certificate;
  3. Certificate that can prove the marital status of the applicant (except in case of a bachelor or a spinster)

    Notes :
    Documents mentioned in numbers b) and c) can be exempted if they already exist in the Archive of DSI;

4. Fees

After of the applicant has chosen the Chinese nationality, he may retain his Portuguese passport as travel document.

E. Application for Change of Chinese Nationality

    The applicant must submit the following documents:

  1. His Macao SAR Permanent Resident Identity Card and before the official issuance of this identity card, a valid BIR and this will be returned to the applicant after being verified;
  2. Birth certificate;
  3. Certificate that can prove that his marital status (except in case of a bachelor or a spinster);
  4. Certificate that he has other foreign nationality.

F. Application by Post

The applicant should submit a bank draft payable to Direccao dos Servicos de Identificacao (the Macau SAR Identification Department).

Application for Naturalization
There is a fee of MOP1,000.00. If the application includes spouse and children, then each family member must pay MOP500.00 and fees are non-refundable, even if the application is turned down. Certificate of nationality: MOP150.00
Application for Renunciation of Chinese Nationality
There is a fee of MOP400.00. If the application includes spouse and children, each family member must pay MOP200.00. However, fees are non-refundable, even if the application is turned down. Certificate of nationality: MOP150.00
Application for Restoration of Chinese Nationality
There is a fee of MOP800.00. If the application includes spouse and children, then each family member must pay MOP400.00. However, fees are non-refundable, even if the application is turned down. Certificate of nationality: MOP150.00
Application for Choosing Chinese Nationality
There is a fee of MOP200.00. If the application includes spouse and children, then each family member must pay MOP100.00. However, fees are non-refundable, even if the application is turned down. Certificate of nationality: MOP150.00
Application for Change of Chinese Nationality
There is a fee of MOP200.00. If the application includes spouse and children, then each family member must pay MOP100.00. However, fees are non-refundable, even if the application is turned down. Certificate of nationality: MOP150.00.

An additional charge is requested since banks in Macau impose a bank commission for accepting foreign bank drafts:

Payable in Macau: no additional charge for this kind of bank draft

Payable in Hong Kong: MOP30.00

Other forms of payment, such as Money order, cashier's order will NOT be accepted.

If the applicant needs the Macau SAR passport urgently, an additional charge for EMS (express mail service) is requested:

If in the place of residence of the applicant, there is no EMS (Express Mail Service), then the applicant may consult local express courier service companies such as DHL, Federal Express, etc. about the price of courier service and add it to the above-mentioned fees.
